Academic Welcome and Guidance

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 school year!  We are excited to get started and hope that you are as well.

On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to orient you to the way that classes will start and try to get you organized for the beginning of the school year.  To do so, Sunday evening or, at the latest, early Monday morning, you must do some preliminary work.  Perhaps your parents can help with this?  First, go into Powerschool.  Your username and password will be the same as your MySeton username and password.  Retrieve your schedule.  You will see that it lists the time of your classes, the course name, and the name of your teacher.

Once you have your schedule, please open the My First Day at Seton document.  You will see that it  provides you with a printed template into which you can list your courses and teacher names.  Print it or make a copy of it first.  Then, hand write or copy and paste the information regarding your courses by period and the teacher’s names on the document.

Now what I would like you to do is go into Canvas and view the Dashboard on your Canvas page.  The Dashboard opens when you click on the icon on the left hand side of the page that says Dashboard.  Once there, I would like you to view Mr. Serna’s Welcome Message.

After you have listened to the message, click into each course on your Dashboard, one at a time.  On the Homepage that comes up for each course, you will find a link/embedded link/URL from the teacher for the first meeting.  Be sure to write in or copy and paste the correct link/embedded link/URL for each period on the right hand side of the My First Day at Seton document.  You can also find the link/embedded link/URL in your teacher’s mail by clicking on the icon on the left hand side of the page that says Inbox.  Many of your teachers have left you mail.

Now you have the information necessary to attend your classes.  On Monday morning, you can either go to the class homepage and click on the link/embedded link/URL at the appointed time, or you can type in the URL that you have written down in the internet browser, click enter, and you will be directed into the live class meeting.

Some things to remember:

  • be a little early and chat with your teacher and classmates as you sign in,

  • if you need help, contact the [email protected]

  • you should check out the Dress Code and Attendance Procedures in the Online Learning Guidelines before Monday,

  • you must check your Seton email daily,

  • remember that you are online live and your classmates can see your little brother in the background making faces at the camera, so you should try to prevent that from happening (no hitting!),

  • remember that all too often in the spring semester we let the day lead us instead of us attacking the day.  Getting good sleep and into a routine is important and you should try to follow that routine daily.  Start the day with a few small wins and that will help you build up for the bigger stresses of the day.  Make your bed.  Clean your room.  Shower and brush your teeth.  Eat something healthy.  Look at your planner and the schedule for the day.  Text a friend.  Exercise.  If you include these activities as wins early in the day, you will be more productive and efficient the rest of the day,

  • remember that you only get out of it what you put into it, (Work Hard-Get Smart!) and finally,

  • it is all going to be okay!  With a little patience and a little grace, we will get through this as a family.

Blessings to you all!  Let’s make some memories together and have an outstanding 2020-2021 school year!  Know that we are all looking forward to seeing you in person soon!
