A Blessing and Groundbreaking Ceremony for the first classroom building of the new campus was held at Seton Catholic Preparatory on February 26, 2010. Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted led the Blessing Ceremony and prayed for the school's continued efforts to provide quality Catholic education modeled after the vision of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the school's patron.
Capital Campaign Committee member and Seton parent, Steve McGrady, emceed the Groundbreaking program. A group of over 200 students, parents, faculty, donors and special guests assembled to show their support for the progress of the campaign so far. Mayor Boyd Dunn, City of Chandler, and Arizona State Senator, Jay Tibshraeny, congratulated the school community for their success and commended the school for its many years of service to the Chandler community.
Mr. McGrady urged the Seton community to continue its efforts to complete the building, as the funds currently collected will be used to construct the building shell. The Seton Capital Campaign Committee will be working diligently over the next 18 months to raise the $5 million needed to complete the building. The Gila River Indian Community was recognized for its generous support of the project, as they awarded a grant to the school for $250,000 in October 2009. Children from St. Peter's Mission School in Bapchule, an elementary feeder school to Seton since its inception in 1954, performed a Native American dance and song to conclude the event.
Construction of the 55,000 sq. ft. building began on March 1, 2010, and will provide a much needed new fine arts level, a black box theater with seating for 400 and 16 additional classrooms. When completed, enrollment will increase to 700 students.
Subsequent phases of the expansion call for the construction of a library/information center and cafeteria, an administration building with additional classrooms, and a performing arts center. Renovation of the existing gymnasium and athletic complex upgrades are also part of the Master Plan. The campus expansion will eliminate the need for temporary buildings and provide adequate classroom space for students, faculty and administration.
The Seton Catholic Capital Campaign is also raising funds to renovate and complete the Sports Complex. Current efforts are underway to complete the new football stadium with the hope of having home varsity football games on campus for the 2010-11 football season.
